Migrant Woman from Bihar Tops Literacy Exam in Kerala

Despite being from Bihar, a migrant woman emerged as the topper of literacy exam conducted for migrant labourers in Kerala. The woman named Romiya Kathur is originally from a small village in Bihar who migrated to Umayanalloor in southern Kollam district of Kerala almost 6 year’s ago. The topper’s husband, Saifullah. Ms Kathur owns a small juice parlour and looks after their three children.

Last month, Romiya Kathur attempted the literacy exam in a local senior secondary school, while carrying her 4 months daughter. In the exam conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority, she scored a full 100 marks in Malayalam. As per Romiya Kathur, Malayalam is not her mother tongue although she learnt to speak and communicate in Malayam language through textbooks.

The exam was held on January 19 in which a total of 1998 migrant labourers appeared in the second phase of 'Changathi'. Over 3,700 applicant has cleared the exam so far, conducted in two phases until now.

'Changathi' in Malayalam stands for Friend, which is a project started by the Kerala Government. The project is aimed towards teaching Malayam language to the migrant labourers within 4 months time period.

Mission Director P S Sreekala also congratulated Romiya Kathur for her achievement by visiting her and her family in Umayanalloor. Romiya Kathur now aims to further excel in the higher secondary examination which is also an equivalent examination conducted by the Mission.
