MU Fails to be Among the Top 100 in NIRF Rankings 2019

The University of Mumbai fails to be among the top 100 ranks of NIRF four times in a row. The list of 2019 does not include MU among the top 100, however, it did secure the 81st position in the university section.

The University of Mumbai, also known as Mumbai University (MU), did not feature in the list of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of 2019 among the top 100 institutions. The NIRF list for the year 2019 was released on 8th April 2019, Monday, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

This was the fourth year in which the university failed to make it. Although it did show improvement from last year by securing the 81st rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework university section. MU had failed to make it to the top 100 of the university section last year and had ranked in the bracket of 151-200.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Dr. Suhas Pednekar, said that the university has improved its NIRF ranking and in that some important inclusions have patents, research publications, passing percentage, and research funding. He said that MU will work towards improving its ranking with the support of its members.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, that ranks educational institutes across India based on research work, teaching standards, outreach programmes, placements, and other parameters.

The NIRF list included ten other universities apart from Mumbai University in the list of top 100 in the university section. Out of them, eight institutes featured in the section of engineering, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Three colleges of Maharashtra including Fergusson College of Pune, St. Xavier’s College of Mumbai, and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology and Biotechnology were also a part of the top 100 in the list.

The ranking of IIT Bombay is fourth in the overall category, which is one rank less from the previous year. It continues to be among the top 10 in three other categories which include management, engineering, and in the category of Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements category.
