Maharashtra’s medical and dental colleges have been opposing the state government’s decision to reserve 67% of the seats in private and deemed dental and medical colleges for candidates who have the state domicile.
The decision was announced by the Government of Maharashtra last Thursday, April 27, 2017. The colleges have asked the state government to revoke the decision.
According to the Resolution passed by the government, 25% seats have also been reserved for OBC, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Nomadic Tribes and Vimukta Jati candidates.
Currently, 50% of the seats offered by the private and deemed medical institutes is filled by state candidate. The reservation for domicile holders has been increased by the government. 50% of the management quota seats have also been reserved for domicile candidates by the government.
President of the Association of Management of Unaided Private Medical and Dental colleges, Kamal Kishore Kadam informed that the association is trying to convince the state government to cancel these recent changes in the reservation policy.

Kadam also added that the MCI has directed the association to conduct admissions on the basis of scores obtained by candidates in NEET exam. He further added that the new reservation norms will intervene with the criteria of merit-based admissions.
He also informed that the institutes in the state are discussing the matter with their counterparts in other states across India. He also said that the deemed and private institutes are planning to start a nationwide movement against this policy.
However, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) is firm on the decision and will not cancel the new domicile-based reservation policy. Talking about the reservation policy, DMER Director said that they will not revoke their decision.
