Tamil Nadu may get a new technical university which will provide affiliation to over 500 engineering colleges in the state. According to the sources, Anna University has been providing affiliation to the engineering colleges as of now and it will soon get IoE status due to which it will lose the affiliation powers.

There are over 537 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University and it is one of the largest technical universities in India. AU Vice-Chancellor Mr. Surappa played a vital role in the improvement of quality education in India. He took several majors such as introducing a broken system for students and getting faculty members from some of the prestigious institutions such as NIT Trichy, IISC Bangalore, IITM and others for the annual inspection of the technical institutions.

During the inspection, the committee recommended action against 92 engineering colleges in the state out of 537 colleges. Poor infrastructure and lack of faculty members made Anna University cut down the student intake from 25% to 50% in 92 engineering colleges. Therefore, a new university in the state will have a separate affiliation centre, registrar and controller of examinations office. DTE has already taken steps to set up these centres for the new varsity.
