NMC Fails to Fill Gaps in Medical Reforms

NMC Bill was introduced earlier this month as a sweeping reform of the existing medical issues but seems to neglect the pre-existing fundamental issues in medical education and health system of the country.

NMC Bill: Gaps in Medical Reforms

The medical fraternity seems to be at unrest ever since the National Medical Commission Bill was disclosed, earlier this month. According to the experts, the NMC Bill fails to fill existing gaps in the system, which was the whole objective of bringing up the NMC, substantial issues of the medical education & health sector remains unaddressed.

NMC Act 2019 proposes to enhance the standards and affordability of medical education to promote the outflow of high-quality doctors, all over the country. The Act came into existence as a replacement of the Indian Medical Council ACT 1956. MCI was dissolved in 2010 due to the scam-taints, MCI President Ketan Desai was also taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation under severe corruption charges.

NMC Roles in the Medical Sector

As NMC is all set to replace MCI, the following roles will be performed by NMC now:

As the NMC bill was released on August 1, 2019, there was merely the organisational difference between MCI and NMC, no fundamental changes were observed in the system of medical education or the fee structures. However, a certain here and there was observed in the admission process, degree awards and licenses.

NMC Bill Gaps

After the coming up of Bill, many doctors and medical experts commented on the shortcomings of NMC Act 2019, have a look at the major gaps in the medical reforms that remain unaddressed in the bill:

  • Rural-Urban imbalance in medical facilities & education
  • The emolument of Inters, fellows, and staff vary drastically, should be made uniform.
  • The condition & standards of medical education vary from region to region
  • Only concentrates on MBBS, PG medical Education ignored completely.
  • No reform under NMC validates the No Corruption Policy
  • Doctor-Patient Ratio is still neglected

It appears as the medical associates are not very satisfied by the coming up of the NMC Act, 2019 as no significant changes have been observed in the structure and rule in contrast to the preceding one. Several protests and backlash were seen by the field experts on the coming up of this bill. Let us wait and see if the Government of India and NMC works in the existing gaps within medical education and facilities in the coming years.
