DU Aspirant Files a Petition Regarding Math in Best of 4 for Eco Hons

A few days earlier, concerns were aired at the ‘open session’ of University of Delhi (DU) regarding the removal of mathematics from the ‘best of four’ subjects that are to be considered for admission in the course of Economics honours. The request has reached the High Court now.

A petition was filed by a student who is seeking to apply for the course Economics honours at the University of Delhi. It says that the introduction of some arbitral changes like this one in the merit-based admissions of the university makes the students suffer as they experience grave loss of not being able to secure a seat in a prime college of one of the best universities of the country.

The student who has filed this petition has secured 98.75 percent marks in her best of four subjects if mathematics is excluded. As per the new eligibility criteria of the Delhi University, the petitioner will have to compulsorily include mathematics in her best of four subjects which will bring her percentage to 97.75, making her lose one whole percentage point.

The petition argues that the change in the eligibility conditions of Delhi University was told to the applicants only a day before the commencement of the application process. The students should have been notified about the revised eligibility criteria a year ago so that they could have strategised their board performance and prioritised subjects accordingly.

Delhi University’s information bulletin for the admission process of the undergraduate programmes for the year 2019-2020 was published on 29th May 2019, Wednesday, online. It declared a change in the eligibility criteria for admission in Economics Honours. Until last year, the best of four subjects of the applicants included a language subject and three other subjects but this year, mathematics has been made a compulsory subject along with the language.

The revised rule is termed as “discriminatory” and “unfair” and the matter of the petition has been listed for 12th June 2019. Another plea was filed by a lawyer in the High Court who claimed that the alteration of eligibility criteria by the university in the last moment was a violation of the principle of natural justice.
