On Friday, a meeting was conducted for all the senior faculty members and officials by Dr. Yogesh Chawla regarding the inauguration of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research’s (PGIMER’s) new satellite OPD at Sangrur. The date for inauguration of the same was decided by the Union Health Minister J P Nadda. Three weeks from now, i.e on September 18, PIGMER’s new satellite OPD will be inaugurated.

But what is surprising to the story is that it still does not have any sort of medical equipment, consulting rooms do not have any furniture and the operating theater is still completely empty and worse, there are no doctors. A day after the meeting, Chawla and the senior officials paid a visit to Sangrur to have a look at the place.

Until Saturday, the construction in the OPD and the guest house for the future doctors and other staff members was in a process though according to Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation Limited (HSCC) officials, the site will be ready till September 18 and will be handed over to the PGI authorities soon.

Lack of hospital resources and equipment is one of the problems faced by the institute and to solve the same, the officials are planning to export the equipment and furniture PGIMER Chandigarh.

According to a faculty member, it was found out that the due to less time left, the administration might have to buy medical equipment on an urgent basis or they will have to export it from another PGIs. Also, the time to export furniture and equipment is also very less and there is a possibility that it won't be completed in time for a operation.

PGI has invited tenders for the same in the first week of September.

PGI Sangrur is a one-storey building with eight OPDs, one for each specialist consultant. Apart from this, there are other rooms for physiotherapy, x-ray, and a “minor OT”. There are other rooms for administrative and technical staff, as well as a cafe.

From September 1, the hospital will also start with the process of hiring doctors. The positions currently vacant are:

  • 14 assistant professors
  • 13 non-academic senior residents
  • Four medical officers on contract basis

Also the catering service for the guest house has not yet been figured out.
