Built at the cost of INR 1,011 crores, Gorakhpur now has its own AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated AIIMS Gorakhpur on 7th December 2021 along with two other projects. The other two out of the three big-ticket projects include a newly built fertiliser plant operated by HURL (Hindustan Urvarak Rasayan Limited) and the Regional Medical Research Centre of the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research).

According to the officials, the newly inaugurated institute will not only be benefiting students and people from eastern Uttar Pradesh but also a huge population of Jharkhand, Nepal and Bihar through its state-of-the-art health facilities.
The foundation of this AIIMS Gorakhpur was laid on 22nd July 2016 by the Prime Minister under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The demand to build and establish the institute was one and a half decades old. This 300-bed teaching and medical institution will be expanding its capacity to 750 in the upcoming days. With the emergency, a 35-bed emergency ward has also come into service to provide quick treatment to patients requiring critical care.
The Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) began in February 2019. So far, AIIMS Gorakhpur has catered to seven lakh people through its OPD. The IPD (Indoor Patient Department) was also started in May this year. Over 200 general operations have been done so far by taking care of this facility. With this inauguration, the institute will now be hosting 13 special and 14 general OPDs to provide students with treatment and consultation on any disease.
