City's premier institution - Patna Women's College has opened its door for the transgender students. The move is the 1st of its kind in Bihar & probably only 2nd in India after the Jorhat College in the Assam state. The Community of the College of Patna Women's College allowed 6 transgenders ,accepting them as transwomen to pursue the diploma courses in the field of computer application. While 3 of the students discontinued the education, the rest are continuing with the course despite the stiff resistance from their community members.
The college has opened its gate for the transgender community to make the members able to become a part of the mainstream.
According to the college, they are God's unique creations & the society at large need to take care of the people. Patna Women's College not seeks to admit them, but the college also supplies them with monthly travel allowances, so that they are able to commute without any difficulties, as informed by the PWC principal Sister Marie Jessie.
The principal continues 'Most of these students are intelligent & of very good nature. I never had any had any trouble in interacting with them. The college also organizes a special gathering for them, annually every Christmas & honours them with the gifts. Even my pupils are very happy & gave them a warm welcome,'
Incidentally, their own community members are against those enrolled in the college. Only two days back, their own community members thrashed the three and threatened them with dire consequences if they continued their studies.
