The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has recently earned a place of distinction at the UK-based Times Higher Education World Rankings 2015-2016, where it has been placed third among Indian universities and between 600 and 800 among universities worldwide.
While in terms of teaching, it has been ranked 191 in the world, leaving behind premier Indian Institutes of Technology and coming second only to Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
“Last year, the ranking was between 1,100 and 1,300. However, this is the first time that we participated in the survey as until now, our data was being collected through external sources. I think the jump in barely one year is commendable though we have our eyes set on a higher target now,” said the VC of the University.
As many as 17 Indian higher education institutions have featured in a list of the world’s best universities topped by California Institute of Technology though none of the Indian institutions appear in the first 200-ranked list. While Indian Institute of Science is in the 251-300 category followed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay in the 351-400 category, the institutions in the 401-500 category are Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Technology-Madras.
Among the universities, Panjab University tops the list among Indian varsities followed by Jadhavpur and then Pune University.
