SRM University Partners with UC Berkeley College of Engineering for Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

SRM University Chennai & Amaravati have entered into a significant partnership with UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering through global partnerships with the SCET or Sutardja Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology, Jacobs Institutes for Design Innovation and GLOBE or Dado & Maria Banatao Centre for Global Education Outreach from Berkeley Engineering. This vital collaboration will facilitate information exchange in the areas of engineering education, specifically in the areas of technology-based entrepreneurship as well as design innovation.

The collaboration will aim at establishing centres of innovation, design and entrepreneurship at SRM University. These centres will give more emphasis to study and practice of “technology-centric” design methodology and innovation. Bringing technical depth and focusing on societal impact will be also a part of these centres.

President of SRM University, Dr. P. Satyanarayanan revealed that the aim of this partnership is to bring a confluence of international ideas as well as technological innovation. The idea is to create an ecosystem of innovation for Amaravati and Chennai by building a Second Bay Area. Faculty members will also be required to play a significant role in this process.

UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering will offer support in the design and development of various courses. All these courses will be concept-oriented and innovative. The faculty members of SRM University can also visit the United States (US) for capacity building.

The significant collaboration will be an advantage to the students of SRM University. Students will be given a chance to pursue a semester abroad at Jacobs Institute Design Innovation or Sutardja Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology. However, the opportunity will only be for selected students. These students will visit the campuses of these two institutes and acquire knowledge in various aspects of engineering. These students will also share the knowledge to the other students of SRM University after returning.

Dean of Engineering at UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering, Mr. Shankar Sastry indicated that the engineering designs and technological innovations are the major ingredients that inspire the youth. Through this significant collaboration, both SRM University and UC Berkeley will focus on design and innovation for creating an environment to promote advancing knowledge in students.

Dr. Sandip Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University - Amaravati pointed that figuring out solutions to complex problems in various domains is in the hands of younger generations. There is a need to make life sustainable and fulfilling for all. The partnership will help achieve that through a synergy between technology and innovation.
