With the permission of the Medical Council of India (MCI), SIU (Symbiosis International University) will soon be setting up India’s first women’s Medical College. The college will be called SMCW, short for Symbiosis Medical College for Women. The college is most likely to begin its first batch from the academic year 2020-21.

Inspiration and Objectives of Symbiosis Medical College for Women
The idea of the college was inspired by a biographic movie on Anandibai Joshi, India’s first woman doctor.
The objective of the college is to empower women and contribute to the requirements of women doctors.
The college aims at escalating the numbers of women doctors in India viz 17% of the total allopathic doctors in the country.
Symbiosis Medical College for Women will become the first medical college in India to offer free education in the field of medicine. Every newcomer to the college will be taking an oath on the first day and will pledge to connect with the community.
Dr Rajiv Yeravdekar, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, SIU said that the college has attracted faculty members from across the country. He further added that the college will be implementing modern interdisciplinary pedagogy to impart practical knowledge. The college plans to achieve this goal with the help of hands-on training in a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre, Cadaveric Lab and more.

Dr Yeravdekar also added that the university will be awarding five scholarships by the name Anandi Gopal Scholarships to provide a full fee waiver for the whole MBBS programme. Just like the Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre (SUHRC), SMCW also has the benefit of already existing in a university that has ‘A++’ accreditation.
