MCI Approves Three New MBBS Colleges in Maharashtra

The MCI has recently approved three new medical colleges in Maharashtra, which is set to bring in over 500 MBBS seats in the state. The three colleges are set to be established in Sindhudurg, Pune and Nagpur, with two being affiliated to Deemed Universities and one under Pvt Management.

MCI Approves 3 New Medical Colleges in Maharashtra

The Medical Council of India (MCI) recently approved three new medical colleges in Maharashtra, which will add a substantial number of seats to the total MBBS seats in the state. Over 500 MBBS seats have been added to the pool of medical seats, bringing the total to 8,900 MBBS seats in Maharashtra, out of which 6,700 seats belong to the government and private medical colleges.

Among the three colleges that are soon to be operational, two of the medical colleges will be affiliated to deemed universities while the third will be under private management. Over the past two years, the state has witnessed a 30% increase in the number of MBBS seats, thus, increasing the chances for MBBS aspirants to pursue their course.

The Medical Council of India approved three medical colleges this week, which will be located in Pune, Sindhudurg and Nagpur. For the 2020-21 batch, Symbiosis International Deemed University has established a Women’s Medical College with 150 MBBS seats on offer at Lavale, Pune. Meanwhile, the SSPM Medical College and Lifetime Hospital also received approval from MCI. The third medical college will be set up in Nagpur, which will operate under Datta Meghe Group (Deemed University).

Along with the three additional medical colleges in the state, MBBS seats have been added to a few existing medical colleges, viz. Datta Meghe College in Wardha, which received 50 more seats, while the Armed Medical College Pune received 10 additional seats.

The Director of DMER Maharashtra, Dr TP Lahane confirmed that the MCI had approved the three new medical colleges in the state. He further added that one of the three colleges will also be part of the centralised admission process. Additionally, a government medical college in Nandurbar that offers 100 MBBS seats is currently under review of the Council and will be available to offer admissions the next academic year as well.

Sources state that the course fees for the medical college set to be established in Sindhudurg will be regulated under the Fee Regulating Authority. Meanwhile, the course fees for the other two medical colleges will be defined by the respective affiliating deemed universities.

For the 2020-21 academic session, 6,700 MBBS seats will be available to the students for admissions through the centralised admission process which will be conducted by the DMER and State CET Cell.
