Bharathiar University, Tamil Nadu has postponed the semester examinations due to the sudden demise of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The semester examinations are scheduled to commence from December 6, 2016, and were to continue till December 12, 2016. The revised schedule of the examination will be announced soon. All the educational institutions in the state will remain closed for three days as the government announced seven days of mourning.
However, the examinations which have to take place under the School of Distance Education will begin as per schedule.

The placements at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras had been deferred on December 5, 6 & 7, 2016 as the state has been under chaos after the death of CM Jayalalithaa. The placements at IIT will, however, begin from December 8, 2016, and will continue as per schedule. The institute had postponed the placements due to floods last year. Manu Santhanam, Advisor of Training and Placements Cell, IIT-Madras explained that even at the time of the news about Jayalalithaa's cardiac arrest, most of the companies did not take a step to come for placements.

On the other hand, Anna University also postponed semester exams last week due to the cyclone Nada. The exams were scheduled to begin from December 1, 2016. However, as per new timetable, the examinations will commence from December 24, 2016.
Most of the schools and colleges are expected to start functioning from December 9, 2016.
