Telangana MBBS Students to Learn Ethics, Compassion and Attitude

The MBBS students of the medical colleges of Telangana will be introduced to a new syllabus from August 2019. Students will be taught about the importance of ethics, communication, and compassion.

Telangana MBBS Students to Learn Ethics, Compassion and Attitude

The MBBS students of Telangana will be introduced to a new syllabus from the month of August this year. The fresh batch of medical students of Telangana will be taught the syllabus titled ‘Competency Based Undergraduate Curriculum’.

Such an initiative is being taken for the first time in India wherein medical students will be taught about topics like compassion, ethics, attitude, and communication.

The faculty of some top medical colleges that are run by the State like Gandhi Medical College (GMC) and Osmania Medical College (OMC) have undergone several sessions of training in the past year. This was a part of the introduction of the new syllabus and the colleges ensured that their faculty were trained from the syllabus committee of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The Principal of OMC, Dr. P Shashikala, said that some more training sessions are left and they are to be taken up in the month of June. The core committee of the college has received training from all the senior members of the MCI. Shashikala said that this new syllabus lays emphasis on moral values, ethics, and compassion, which are important subjects that need to be taught to medical students.

Apart from giving thrust on ethics, the new syllabus also covers grounds in Organ Donation, Public Health, Communication, and Mental Health. The course is abbreviated as AETCOM, which means Attitude, Ethics, and Communication, and will stress upon ethical values, acquisition of communication skills, responsiveness to the needs of patients, etc.

The medical students will be given training on how to communicate effectively with the patients and their relatives in a manner which is respectful to the values, preferences, beliefs, privacy, and confidentiality of the patient. It will teach students about altruism, professionalism, and respect within professional relationships.

Additionally, the syllabus also attempts to give an opportunity to students from diverse backgrounds and educational streams to transition appropriately through a proper foundation course and also dedicate time to pursue some co-curricular activities.
