UGC Announces Anti-Ragging Film-making Competition for Universities

  • Every university is to submit 3 of their best films on ragging by November 30 and best film will get Rs. 5 lakh prize money.
UGC Announces Anti-Ragging Film-making Competition for Universities

In an attempt to restrict ragging, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will be organizing a national-level film-making competition. Through this event, the UGC will also engage the students to debate regarding the hazards of ragging.

A letter was issued by the UGC to the Vice-Chancellors of various universities on Friday, September 8, 2017, asking them to introduce a National University Film Making Competition to spread the awareness regarding ragging among students.

According to the letter issued by the Additional Secretary of UGC, Dr. Pankaj Mittal, the universities and higher education institutes can motivate their students to develop short films or documentaries on the issue of ragging.

It was also mentioned in the letter that the documentary or films can be 5 to 10 minutes long. An expert committee will be appointed to select the three best films among all the entries submitted by participating universities. Prize money has also been declared for the winners.

The letter added that different departments of universities can apply separately and the films representing the university can be shortlisted through an internal selection process. The films selected by the respective universities can be sent to the UGC.

According to the rules, the shortlisted films will become the property of UGC and will be uploaded on its official website. However, the commission will give due credit to the respective filmmakers. Universities and institutes have been asked to publicize this initiative and send their three best films latest by November 30, 2017.

UGC has started various initiatives and has set up regulations to prevent ragging incidents in higher education institutes. The institutes have been asked to closely monitor on campus activities and follow these regulations to curb ragging. Media campaigns have also been launched by the UGC for the same.
