To encourage games and sport University Grants Commission (UGC) is coming with new courses related to these fields. Recently UGC has issued notification pertaining to launch of two new degrees in the field of sports science - a three-year Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES) course and a two-year Master of Physical Education and Sports (MPES).
Sources said that Physical education is already being taught in a number of institutes under the purview of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to encourage the learners to take up teaching as their profession.
The two new courses are aimed at creating professionals who will work in the field and apply for Director or Assistant Director level positions.
The notification issued by the UGC said it had the approval of the central Government. The UGC has also asked Universities, which are already offering BPE and MPE programmes, that they shall accordingly restructure these programmes and award the degree.
There are several courses on physical education such as Bachelor in Physical Education (B. PEd), Masters in Physical Education (M.PEd), Certificate in Physical Education (C. PEd) and Diploma in Physical Education (D. PEd).
Now days several Universities have introduced Physical Education as a part of their curriculum. Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (IGIPESS) Delhi, Osmania University Hyderabad, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Kolhapur , Prasanmani College of Shivaji University, Department of Sports Physical Education Agra University, Alagappa University, Annamalai University, University of Mumbai Faculty of Arts New Delhi, Sports Authority of India Thiruvananthapuram, University of Madras, Faculty of Physical Education, Centenary Buildings Chennai, Pondicherry University, Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Noida etc. offer different courses on Physical education.
