The University Grants Commission (UGC) is expected to take action against some of the colleges affiliated to Delhi University that are functioning without a regular principal. Acting Heads are running some of the top colleges of DU.
According to sources, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has directed the UGC to initiate action against DU colleges functioning without regular principals. At least 20 DU colleges have not taken steps to appoint regular principals.
A senior official of UGC revealed that the commission is chalking out details regarding the action that can be initiated against colleges serving without regular principals. The UGC will soon submit a report to HRD Ministry in this regard.
A senior HRD Ministry official indicated that the government has been constantly emphasising the 21 colleges affiliated to Delhi University to appoint regular principals so that there will be academic programmes in colleges. Despite several deadlines given by the government, the colleges did not take steps for appointing regular principals. The government expects a better administration in these colleges since all these colleges are eligible for grant-in-aid, he added.
Permanent principals are necessary for colleges to take crucial administrative decisions. Several development projects in the colleges will be delayed due to the absence of regular principals. Ad hoc principals do not have the authority to take up developmental activities in colleges.
In June 2018, a meeting took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan to discuss the appointment of principals in DU colleges.
