CBSE has decided to introduce a well-designed and streamlined Health and Physical Education course to promote mainstream physical education and health in schools affiliated to CBSE. The course will be implemented for the students of Class 9 to Class 10. The new course will be introduced for the next academic session, and it is mandatory for all the CBSE schools to introduce a course in Health and Physical Education.

After hearing about the decision made by the CBSE, renowned cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, tweeted that it is one of the best birthday gifts that he has ever received. Tendulkar applauded the decision of CBSE and said that it is a great move to focus on sports and fitness especially for students from classes 9 to 10. He also thanked the board for standing up for sports and the brighter future of children

The CBSE will make Health and Physical Education mandatory for class 10 and class 12 students to qualify in health and physical education subject in order to appear for board exams. Grades will be awarded for this subject through an internal process by the teachers of the school. Although the subject is mandatory, schools have been given the freedom to decide the activities that they want to list under this course. The students will have to participate in any of those listed activities during the period basis which the grades will be awarded.

Aims and Outcomes of CBSE Health and Physical Education Course: -

  • One of the major aims of the course is to enable the students to attain an optimum state of health.
  • The course will also promote Life Skills among the students.
  • It has also been introduced to tackle obesity amongst students at a young age by adding a period of physical activity.
  • CBSE has clearly defined that the new course in Health and Physical Education will promote the holistic development of children.
  • Through this course, a child will turn into a well-balanced individual in all walks of life.

Issuing an official order regarding mandating Health and Physical Education course for Class 9 to Class 12 students, CBSE has directed the schools to reserve one period every day for Health and Physical course. While preparing the timetable for the upcoming academic session, the schools must take CBSE’s mandatory rule into consideration. The course will also be separate from the Physical Education subject.

CBSE further confirmed that a 150-page methodology, detailed guidelines and transactional strategies of Health and Physical Education course has also been formed and will be available on the official website of CBSE soon.
