In the last year’s batch of BA (Honours) Economics of the Hansraj College of Delhi University, students from almost all the states can be found. The batch comprises four students from the states of Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh each, three students each from Assam and Telangana, and two students each from the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, and Odisha. There was one student from each of the states of Mizoram, Sikkim, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, and Tamil Nadu. The total strength of the batch is 155 and students from 21 states of India can be found to be a part of this batch.

This diversity is very common in most of the top colleges of the University of Delhi where the cut off marks are expected soon and the admission process is underway. The principals of these colleges say that there has been a consistent rise in the number of students from outside Delhi but over the last five years, a noticeable pattern has been observed in which the number of students from the southern states of India has been increasing.

The principal of Sri Venkateswara College, Dr. P Hemalatha, that the neighbouring states and South Indian states form a significant representation in the strength of the batches of Delhi University. She said that the reason for this is the popularity of the combination of courses that are offered at DU as they are considered ideal by students preparing for several competitive exams. Out of the total strength of the college which is 3,700 approximately, around 60 students were from Andhra Pradesh, 40 were from Telangana, and 30 from Kerala.

The university’s subject combinations that are made available via the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and also the Bachelor of Arts programme which is seen as a gateway to many competitive exams are some factors that are increasing the popularity of DU in South India. Delhi also harbours many famed coaching institutes that help students in preparing for these exams and it is smoother to prepare for civil services and get admission in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here, which is also the target for many students.
