The Government of Maharashtra is deliberating to conduct a common entrance test or CET for the B.Sc aspirants and aspirants of BA, B.Com and other non-professional undergraduate courses. The state government of Maharashtra is mulling this option because of the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in the cancellation of class XIIth CBSE and other Board exams. Earlier, admission into the BA, B.Com, B.Sc and other non-professional undergraduate courses was done based on the class XIIth board exam marks obtained by the aspirants. The CET is expected to be conducted by July last week or August first week this year.

While addressing a news conference at the College of Engineering Pune on 25th June, the Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant said they are yet to finalise whether the CET will be conducted at the university or institute level, division level or state-level. He also said that a committee has been constituted, that comprises of Higher Education Department officials, State CET Cell officials and vice-chancellors representing different universities, to decide on conducting the CET for B.Sc, B.Com, BA and other non-professional undergraduate courses.

The minister also added that a decision will be taken only after all the stakeholders, professors, students and parents are on board with the decision.

Much about the anticipated CET is still unknown like the mode of the CET, pattern and syllabus. The state government of Maharashtra had earlier decided to conduct a CET for First-year Junior College or class XI admission. The decision to conduct the FYJC CET for the current academic year was taken in the wake of the COVID-19 second wave that led to the cancellation of the class 10 SSC exams.

Samant concluded by saying that if the CET happens, the students can appear in it without paying any additional bucks as they have already paid their HSC exam fee. Maharashtra already has a common entrance test that the State CET cell conducts for B.Tech, B.Pharm and B.Sc Agriculture courses.
