In a meeting at IIT Madras, it was concluded that a new paper, Biomedical Engineering (BME) will be introduced in GATE 2020. This step is taken in order to unify the UG syllabus of Biomedical Engineering in several universities and also to increase the growth of Biomedical Engineering Research and development of products in India.

The meeting was held at IIT Madras and representatives from other IITs were present. This was organized by the IIT Madras, Biomedical Engineering Group of Applied Mechanics Department. Prof. M. Manivannan, Biomedical Engineering Group of Applied Mechanics Department said that this has the power to make this subject, Biomedical Engineering one of the most popular programs in India like it is in rest of the world. He also added that it is a combined effort made by all the IITs and without the cooperation, the new paper would not have been possible.

The problems that the BME students face were discussed in the meeting. In GATE, the Biomedical students only used to write two paper i.e. Instrumentation and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering which were more or less closer to their curriculum. Thus, they needed to compete with other students who had specialization in those two subjects. As a result, it reduces the chances and made it difficult for the BME students to score good marks in GATE. Therefore, due to the introduction of the new BME paper in GATE, the chances for the BME students scoring better in the entrance exam increased.

GATE 2020 will be conducted on 1,2,8, and 9 February. It will be conducted for more than 20 subjects next year. The examination centres of GATE are situated in various cities across India. It is also conducted in six cities outside India. GATE is a Computer Based Test (CBT).
