Proposal to Conduct CAT in Regional Languages

The Director ofIndian Institute of Management, Rohtak(IIM Rohtak), Professor Dheeraj Sharma, has raised an issue with the coordinator ofCAT 2020,IIM Indore. Professor Sharma has suggested that the Common Admission Test (CAT) be conducted in Indian languages as well. Presently, CAT is held only in the English language.

An official aware of the development who chose to be anonymous has revealed that Professor Sharma has written a letter to the Director of IIM Indore, Professor Himanshu Rai, stating that it is one of the aims of theNational Education Policy (NEP)to promote learning in local languages. In his letter, Sharma wrote that theIndian Institutes of Management (IIMs)could take the lead by allowing interested students to pursue programmes in the management stream in any of the Schedule VII languages of their choice. He coaxed Rai to take up the issue with the core committee that is responsible for overseeing the conduct of CAT.

Sharma confirmed writing to IIM Indore when asked about this development. He suggested that a lack of proficiency in the English language should not be a reason for any candidate to be unable to go for higher education in management. He said that the issue should be looked into since it also comes under one of the key thrust areas of the NEP.

CAT is undoubtedly one of the most popularMBA entrance exams in Indiawith over 2.5 lacs test takers every year. TheCAT cutoffscores differ from IIM to IIM and the weightage given to theCAT percentilefor selecting candidates also varies.

Significantly, the issue raised by Professor Sharma comes at a time when the Union education ministry is looking for ways to promote higher education in Indian languages. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Education Minister, has laid emphasis upon the need to provide higher education in Indian languages in various meetings and speeches.

The Indian languages that are included in Schedule VIII of theIndian Constitutionare Bengali, Assamese, Bodo, Gujarati, Dogri, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kannada, Konkani, Manipuri, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Maithili, Oriya, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Santhali, Tamil, Sindhi, Telugu and Urdu.
