PSU Recruitment at IITs to be Conducted Before Admission?

The HRD Ministry and IITs will soon consult the representatives/ officials of PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) with an objective to get them to conduct the hiring process before the commencement of the academic session. Every year, many M.Tech students at IITs leave the course mid-way to take up jobs in PSUs. As a result, hundreds of M.Tech seats are remaining vacant in IITs. The PSUs come for the campus placements just three months after the commencement of academic session. PSUs also consider GATE score for the recruitment of candidates into various posts.

The recruitment policy of PSUs has been causing discomfort to the premier institutes. Therefore, HRD Ministry and IITs will ask PSUs to conduct recruitment drive before the commencement of academic session so that the premier engineering institutes can cover up vacant seats by offering admission to the candidates who really want to pursue M.Tech course.

One of the members of IIT Council revealed that the late hiring process of PSUs is leading to 30% M.Tech seats remaining vacant in several departments at IITs. The admission process concludes by the time PSUs come for placements and the IITs have no option then to fill up the vacant seats. Apart from IITs, NITs and centrally funded technical institutes also face the same issue, he added.

IIT Ropar Director, Mr. SK Das pointed out that if students leave the course midway, the IITs and NITs end up with revenue loss. The HRD Ministry has assured to resolve the issue as early as possible, he indicated.
