Tamil Nadu Govt. Rejects Proposal on NEET Based Admissions for AYUSH Courses

After expressing its opinion on centre’s decisions on holdingNEET twice a yearandproposal to replace UGC with HECI (Higher Education Commission of India), the government of Tamil Nadu has rejected a proposal to holdNEET based admissions for AYUSH courses. The government of Tamil Nadu is not in favour of any of the centre’s proposals as mentioned above. The state government has clearly informed the centre that it would consider Class 12 marks for the admission to AYUSH courses.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswamy confirmed that the decision regarding accepting Class 12 marks for the admission to AYUSH courses instead ofNEETwas taken at a high-level meeting chaired by CM, Deputy CM and other top officials of the government.

Mr. Palaniswamy further confirmed that the central government make any amendments with respect to AYUSH admissions in the Indian Medicine Central Council Act. The centre’s direction on considering NEET score for the admission to AYUSH course is just an advisory, and the state government has the right to consider or reject the advice, he added.

Over the last two years, NEET has faced severe opposition from the government of Tamil Nadu, parents, students and opposition parties. This year, CBSE was criticised for49 translation errors in NEET-UG 2018 Tamil question paper. The issue was taken up withMadras HC which directed CBSE to award 196 marks to NEET-UG 2018 Tamil examineesto compensate translation errors.
