2,806 Teaching Posts Vacant in IITs, 3,211 in NITs
A huge number of teaching positions are vacant in Indian premier institutes. Teaching positions fall vacant due to resignation, retirement and additional requirements because of enhanced students’ strength.
As per the official data of HRD Ministry, close to2,813teaching posts vacant inIITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and5,606faculty positions are vacant in central universities. On the other hand,2,311faculty posts are vacant inNITsandIIEST (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology)while258teaching posts are vacant inIIMs (Indian Institutes of Management).
Responding to the issue of vacant faculty positions in premier institutes, a senior HRD Ministry official revealed that vacant posts and filling up the teaching positions are a continuous process. Teaching positions fall vacant due to resignation, retirement and additional requirements on account of enhanced students’ strength, he added.

Explaining further, the HRD official indicated that the premier institutes are adopting several measures to address the issue of faculty shortage so that the studies of students will not be affected. Many institutes are engaging research scholars, visiting faculty, re-employment of retired faculty, recruiting faculty on contract basis etc. to mitigate the faculty shortage and enable continuous teaching and learning process. The premier institutes also publish year-round rolling advertisements to attract faculty, he informed.

Apart from IITs, NITs, IIEST and central universities,IIITsacross the country have324vacant teaching posts whileIISc (Indian Institute of Science)have88teaching positions vacant.School of Planning & Architecture (SPA)andIISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research)have 96 and100faculty positions vacant respectively.
