Delhi University affiliated Hindu College has announced that a new building is under construction, that has been dedicated to providing the undergraduate students of the college with a place to conduct research activities, to promote the spirit of research at the undergraduate level itself, where normally it lacks.

As per the officials, Hindu College is in the process of establishing a four-storey building which will house the Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Research. They added that the construction of the building has already begun and is expected to be completed by the month of March in 2020. The research centre will be home to various laboratories for different science programmes such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry and Physics as well as research laboratories for language and media too. There will be dedicated cells and rooms that will be provided to the undergraduate students who wish to pursue research activities.

Commenting on the announcement, the Principal of Hindu College, Dr Anju Srivastava stated that the decision to establish a building dedicated to the research activities at the undergraduate level had come after a need to push undergraduate students to venture into inter-disciplinary research activities had been experienced at the college. She stated that the student did not have much scope of taking part in research activities at the undergraduate level. However, the college has experienced that the students have become more and more curious, questioning every aspect of their streams and different topics. She mentioned that it is the duty of the college to provide the students with the opportunities that the students require. This will also help in building the overall credentials of the student.

Sources state that all the undergraduate students will be provided with the opportunity to take part in research activities and such activities will be counted as extra-curricular activities. This means that it will not be compulsory for the students to undertake research activities at the college. Among the research cells that will be available to the student at the college, there will be a media lab. Even though the college does not provide any programme or degree in journalism, the media laboratory will be used by the students of Sociology (Hons) programme at the college for their ethnographic film-making course.
