IIT Delhi Develops Infection Proof Fabric

The created fabric acquires a non-microbial functionality through a series of chemical processing activities. The best thing about the fabric is that even after multiple washing, the fabric doesn’t lose its antimicrobial functionality.

IIT Delhi Infection free Fabric

With assistance from his professors, a student from IIT Delhi has developed an infection proof fabric. The fabric has been developed to prevent hospital-acquired infections, namely the nosocomial infections. The created fabric acquires a non-microbial functionality through a series of chemical processing activities. The best thing about the fabric is that even after multiple washing, the fabric doesn’t lose its antimicrobial functionality. The fabric can be stitched into various elements at the hospital such as bedsheets, curtains, uniforms for officials and patients, etc.

The infection proof fabric has been developed by IIT Delhi in association with Fabiosys Innovations Startup team which is a tech startup formed under Technology Business Incubator, IIT Delhi. The startup team has been formed with the aim to work for hospital safety and the fabric has been created by the team to enhance the sanity in the hospitals.

The fabric development project has been financed by the Human Resource Development, Department of Science and Technology and Department of biotechnology, Delhi. A professor from Textile and Fabric department, professor Mukhopadhyay stated that the fabric processing technology converts the general cotton into an infection proof fabric. He further added that through the textile industries’ machinery, the cotton rolls undergo a specific chemical reaction that helps it gain powerful anti-microbial functionality.

The fabric has been developed keeping into context the analytics from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which states that almost 10 out of every 100 patients in the hospital gains hospital-acquired infections.
