IIT-IISc Launches Common Admission Portal for International Applicants

Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Human Resource Development Minister, announced the launch of the common admission portal for International students to pursue their PG programmes from IITs and IISc.

The Minister for Human Resource Development Ministry, Ramesh Pokhriyal has announced the launch of a common admission portal, which will be used for the admission processes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The admission portal will be used by international aspirants who wish to pursue postgraduate programmes from the institutes.

Sources have stated that the common admission portal will facilitate the admission process for 600 different Masters and PhD-level programmes offered by the IITs and IISc in the disciplines of Technology and Science. They added that the portal has been launched, however, the services of the common admission portal will be available from July 2020 admissions. Sources also add that the services will also be applicable to the Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and the Person of Indian-Origin (PIO).

A leading news agency has stated that the common admission portal has been developed to provide a user-friendly interface to explore and apply to the different programmes at the same time. They added that the portal has been developed by IIT Bombay under the consultation of IITs and IISc GATE committee.

Among the benefits that International students will receive by pursuing their higher education programmes in India is the option of securing teaching or research assistantships so as to fund their education in India. Sources state that the tuition fees that will be applicable to the students from SAARC countries will be lower than other International applicants.

With the introduction of the common admission portal, the administration of IITs and IISc expect to see a rise in the number of applications being received from international students, which have been accompanied by scholarships and hostel accommodation as well.

The decision had been made in a meeting that had been conducted on Friday, 27th September 2019, along with various other decisions. All the proposals or decisions had been directed towards improving the number of international applications. One of the decisions allows international applicants to apply directly for JEE Advanced instead of JEE Main.
