IIT Kharagpur Creates an Online Forum to Help Stranded Foreign Students

IIT Kharagpur created an online forum to help stranded foreign students at the institute during the national lockdown.

An online forum has been developed by IIT Kharagpur through which stranded foreign students at the institute can share their problems due to national lockdown amidst COVID 19, according to a spokesperson of the institute. The premier institute has students and post-doctoral fellowship candidates from countries Russia, France, South Korea, Colombia, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria SriLanka and Zimbabwe.

The spokesperson said that the Office of International Relations (OIR) is reaching out to the foreign students and the forum is also used to share academic information. The OIR is helping students get their visas extended and also processing their scholarships so that they do not face any problem due to lockdown.

He further said added that the institute is networking with the alumni through social media to reach out to current students who are stranded in countries where they are for higher education.

A student in the US who is doing internship has tweeted and was seeking help from Indian authorities after getting stranded thereafter which an IIT Kharagpur student helped her to connect with IIT Kharagpur Foundation, an alumni body of the institute in the US. The IIT Kharagpur Foundation is helping her now in all possible ways said the spokesperson.

Associate Dean of International Relations, Professor Anandaroop Bhattacharya said that there are several foreign students who are receiving financial aid under international programmes run by them and outreach bodies of the Centre. They are making all efforts to help them receive the scholarship on time. He further added that the IIT Kharagpur campus is the home away from home for students and there is nothing to worry for them.

Tamim Boubou, a student from Syria is enrolled in M.Tech in Control System Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering is utilising his time to attend online video lectures and finds it very useful and interactive.
