The 22nd inter-IIT aquatic championship commenced from October 1, 2016, at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The event was inaugurated by Padma Shree, Bula Chaudhary.

The event was started with a march past led by IIT-BHU. Other institutes that followed were IIT-Bhubaneshwar, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kanpur. The tunes of the event were presented by the honorable band of the 14th Sikh Regiment. The competition was started by the chief guest after releasing pigeons and balloons.
Padma Shree, Bula Chaudhary addressed the gathering. Sharing her life experiences, she told the participants how she fought all odds and emerged as a champion even after giving birth to her son. She also said that parenthood changed her perceptive of life and a new phase began in her life that was filled with success and positivity.

After the address of Bula Chaudhary, the oath ceremony was conducted. It was administered by the General Secretary of Games and Sports Council, IIT-Kanpur, Robinson Guria.
