KISS, UNV, UNSSC & Niti Aayog Collaborate to Organise Workshops on Sustainable Development Goals

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) organised two national-level workshops on ‘Sustainable Development Goals in India’ from February 15 to February 17, 2018. The workshops were organised in association with NITI Aayog, UNV (United Nations Volunteers), UNSSC (United Nation Systems Staff College) Germany. The primary motive behind the conduct of the workshops was capacity building for sustainable development goals.

Workshops on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are first of its kind in India with UNSSC conducting SDG training in the country for the first time. KISS collaborated with NITI Aayog for the first time to conduct one of the largest and comprehensive capacity building exercises and high-profile SDG event in India.

Addressing the gathering during then SDG workshop, Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar explained that the government is committed to work towards achieving SDG goals. With a motive to promote and implement SDG goals, the government has come up with several schemes. However, the targets can be achieved in time only through localization of SDG, which is regarded as a creative methodology.

Advisor to NITI Aayog, Mr. Ashok Jain pointed that KISS is the true reflection of SDG on Earth.

Head of UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development, Mr. Patrick Van Weerlet explained that communication, leadership, empowerment and knowledge are the key aspects to achieve SDG.

The agenda of SDG is to mitigate the problems of hunger and poverty, as well as, to ensure a peaceful and prosperous world. KISS is one of the best institutes that have been focusing on these aspects for the last 25 years, explained by Founder of KISS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta.

The first workshop was themed around ‘Capacity Development on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’. The workshop was jointly organised by KISS, UNV and UNSSC on February 15 & 16, 2018. The workshop was primarily meant for national and international UN volunteers in India. SDG implementation from NGOs and UN Agencies was the major focus area of the workshop.

The second workshop was conducted on ‘Building Capacity for Localising SDGs’. The national-level workshop was jointly organised by KISS and NITI Aayog on February 16 & 17, 2018. The workshop witnessed the participation of senior government officials from different states, researchers, representatives from training institutes, district-level administrators, planners and international partners associated with SDG 2030 Agenda in India. The major focus area of the workshop was understanding capacity building requirements of all the states in India. Prominent personalities delivered a speech during the workshop.
