Uttar Pradesh is all set to have its first National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) as the Government approves 25 Acres of land to the Ministry of Textile in Varanasi for the 18th NIFT campus in the country. The process of setting up a NIFT was initiated in 2016 for initiating Fashion Design and Technology courses in UP. The Industrial Development Department has allocated the land on behalf of the UP state government. Currently, there are 16 functional campuses of NIFT across the country and the 17th campus is under construction in Haryana’s Panchkula.
The Cheif Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has given a letter to the textile minister of Union government, Smt. Smriti Irani promising the 25 acres and for NIFT in Varanasi. The officials have said that the institute will be a full-fledged one which will be offering courses in fashion technology, management, communication, knitwear design, leather design and more.
Naveen Sehgal Principal Secretary of Khadi, Textile and Silk Industries, UP Government informed that historically the local artisans of Eastern India were famous for their silk sarees which were popular worldwide. Still, in the village of Mubarakpur, there is a large population of artisans who produce fine silk and handloom sarees and involved in the business as well. He added that the campus, besides providing education to the students will also conduct workshops for local artisans to help them produce more of their product and make them aware of marketing techniques.
The officials have also said that for every NIFT institute, the state government allocates the land and after the allocation is done, the institute invests in setting up the campus. The format for setting up NIFT Varanasi will be the same. NIFT Mumbai, NIFT Bangalore, NIFT Kolkata are some of the top NIFT institutes that have produced stalwarts in the fashion industry in India and worldwide. NIFT Varanasi will also try to achieve that level of success.
