Odisha CM: NISER Should be Honored with National Importance Status

Naveen Patnaik, Odisha Chief Minister on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to grant Institute of National Importance status to National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar through an Act of Parliament.

Patnaik wrote stating that considering the vision of the institute and its parity with Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), the Odisha government strongly recommends that NISER should be declared as an institute of national importance at the earliest by an Act of Parliament. This would help NISER to become eligible for the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) selection of world-class institutions.

He added that NISER has been awarded among the top five institutes in the country in the rating list given by Nature Index of Institution Outputs for its research contributions to the country.

Assuring to make National Institute of Science Education and Research a world class institute in India, he said that the varsity has grown expeditiously in the nine years since the establishment of the Institute and the Government of the Odisha will provide all possible support and contribute to NISER in attaining its goal to become a world-class institution in India.

The institute has grown into a 300-acre campus from a modest beginning of a transit campus in the year 2007. Prime Minister of India, Shree Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the NISER campus at Jatani, Odisha on 6 February in the year 2016.

The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) was established on 28 August 2006 along the lines of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore and the seven sister institutions of IISERs. However, NISER is governed by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) unlike the IISERs operated by the Ministry of Human Resources Development of India.
