Osmania University Witnesses Surge in Number of PhDs

Osmania University in Hyderabad has seen a steep rise in the number of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree receiving students from the university in the current year. Though the M.Phill degree numbers have declined, the research papers submission in science specialisation has gone up.

In the 2017-18 academic year, 469 Ph.D. degrees were awarded by the Osmania University which was up by 60 degrees than 609 degrees being offered in 2016-17. On the other hand, Osmania University M.Phil students’ numbers dipped to 18 in 2017-18 as compared to 46 students in 2016-17.

In the 2017-18 academic year, statistics show that the faculty of science awarded the highest number of Ph.D. degrees in Osmania University. The faculty of science awarded a total of 220 Ph.D. degrees in the 2017-18 academic year to the Ph.D. scholars. The Arts department and the social science department granted 58 and 57 Ph.D. degrees respectively.

The university says the reason behind an increase in the number of Ph.D. degrees is that the students submitted their research at the very last moment or it would have been late for various reasons.

A professor of Osmania Univerity said that there were some Ph.D. researchers who were doing a Ph.D. from last 8 to 10 years. Most of them submitted their papers as there was pressure from the faculties to take up new students in Ph.D. research schemes.

Another professor claimed that the faculty power in the Science Departments is maximum in the university so many Ph.D. scholars were from those departments. He also expressed his grief that among the vast number of Ph.Ds being offered, only 30 can be considered as good quality.

The University awarded the Ph.D. degrees with the help of anti-plagiarism software which was not there before.
