As one of the latest innovations, PGIMER ie. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh doctors and researchers have designed GPRS-guided wheelchair and stretcher in collaboration with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi that has resulted in a positive response from the attendants of the patients.
Features of the wheelchair and stretcher:
- A tablet that is pre-loaded with a map of the institute is attached to the wheelchair and stretcher
- The equipment will help patients move from one department to another and other areas inside the PGIMER campus
- Time saving
- Provision for regional language-based voice service apart from English
The model of the same was presented at the institute’s 4th Annual Research Day on Saturday, 17th September 2016. The next step is to look for partners from the technology sectors to aid in the process of manufacturing around 200 wheelchairs and stretchers, the doctors revealed.

Once these are ready, the patients will be granted access to the wheelchairs and stretchers as soon as they are issued cards at the counters and later deposited at the destination location.
The Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, was present on the occasion of the Annual Research Day. He mentioned that scholars at IIT Mandi are also working on a similar project as that of PGIMER.
