TN Government Launches Education Channel for School Students

In one of the Tamil Nadu Government’s initiatives, an education channel, Kalvi Tholaikkaatchi has been launched for the school students. Municipal Schools had been equipped with cable TV to allow teachers to use the programmes that will be aired on the channel to teach the school students.

On Monday, 26th August 2019, Edappadi K Palaniswami, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, launched a new Education Channel by the name of Kalvi Tholaikkaatchi for the school students.

In a bid to improve the education system in the state, it was decided to bring in an education channel for students, stated the Chief Minister. He remarked that the decision will help in reducing the complaints of “children do not study because of TV” that are made by the parents.

Sources state the education channel will focus on providing the school students with television programmes in different education themes. They added that some of the areas that will be focused upon include, classes on different lessons including NEET, different schemes on offer by the education department, interviews of the School Education minister along with other different content on education.

The education channel will also function as a medium for communicating with people of the state. Different programs will be telecasted that will provide the people with information on different training modules, employment opportunities as well as the schemes of government that can be used by the people. Leading news websites have stated that the channel will air programmes between 6 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Prior to launching the initiative, the municipal schools had been equipped with Cable TV across the classes. Sources have stated that the schools that do not possess a cable tv, must ensure that the air the different programmes of the education channel via YouTube. They added that the education channel will have a YouTube channel which will have all the programmes that are expected to be telecasted on TV.

Sources state that the syllabus that will be followed by the channel, had been carefully designed by a team of teachers along with support from the State Council for Education Research and Training (SCERT).

The education channel, which has been aimed at assisting students, teachers as well as the parents, was earlier expected to be released at the beginning of the year. However due to different preparatory reasons, as stated by leading news agencies, the entire process had been delayed. The channel will be launched on Thamizhaga Cable TV Communication Private Limited and Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV.

The education department further stated that plans are being made to provide the programmes aired by the channel on Mobile platforms, both for IOS and Android platforms. The launch of the education channel can be a good initiative if the resources are properly used. With almost all the households in Tamil Nadu owning a TV set, parents will now be able to make their children watch educational programmes as well.
