The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has approved sub-quota for govt-school students who clear NEET. The step has been taken as there has been a drastic dip in the number of govt-school students in the state medical colleges.
Ever since the introduction of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Tamil Nadu has been opposing the national-level entrance exam. The inception of the exam has drastically reduced the number of medical aspirants from joining the medical colleges in the state.
On Saturday, 21st March 2020, TN Chief Minister, K Palaniswamy announced that the State Government has been planning to introduce a law for government school students who qualify neet to avail a sub-quota and now the same has been approved. The step has been taken as the number of government school students who enrolled in medical colleges in Tamil Nadu had reduced intensely. The Tamil Nadu Cabinet has approved a 7.5 percent quota within the existing reservation in medical UG courses for the students from the state government schools. According to the reports, the sub-quota will also include government seats in private colleges as well.
Previously, TN Chief Minister added that a special law will be brought into force, to allow sub-quota for government school students who are able to crack the national level entrance test. With their ‘ongoing battle’ with the Supreme Court against NEET, this step will allow the students to receive that extra aid to stand a fighting chance against other students.
In the statement provided by CM K Palaniswamy, all government school students who completed their schooling, i.e. from classes 1 to 12 from a government, municipal or Corporation-run schools in the state, would be eligible for the quota.

He further added that a commission will be established to delve deeper into the matter and bring forth effective solutions. It will be the duty of the commission to study the reasons behind the reduced number of applications from government school students in the MBBS colleges of the state. They will also look into the economical backgrounds of the students and make relevant suggestions, which should be submitted within a month.

The Commission will comprise of various government officials and ministers. Among them, a retired High Court Judge will head the commission, along with different secretaries of school education, law departments, family welfare, and two academicians selected by the department of school education.
