EWS Quota in NEET UG

In 2019, the proposal for a 10% EWS Quota (Economically Weaker Sector) among general category candidates came into the picture. In case, the 10% seats reserved for the EWS category is over and the General Category seats are available, that case, the candidates are eligible for the general category seats as well. NEET 2021 new exam date has been released. The exam will be held on September 12. The application process for the same is also on its way.

EWS Quota Latest Updates 2021

  • PM Modi has announced 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the All India Quota (AIQ) Scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate medical / dental courses (MBBS / MD / MS / Diploma / BDS / MDS) from the current academic year 2021-22 onwards.
  • This decision will benefit every year nearly 1500 OBC students in MBBS and 2500 OBC students in postgraduation and also around 550 EWS students in MBBS and around 1000 EWS students in postgraduation.

What is EWS Quota in NEET?

According to the government policy introduced in 2019, 10% of the total seats will be reserved for GEN-EWS candidates for admission to MBBS/BDS colleges in India. General candidates whose family has a gross annual income below Rs.8 LPA will come under EWS Quota in NEET-UG. One of the most interesting parts of the EWS Quota in NEET is that the EWS cutoff was lower than OBC which was beneficial for many general category candidates.

Who is Eligible for EWS Quota in NEET-UG?

When the EWS Quota was increased by the government, many medical aspirants were unclear about its eligibility. Check out the eligibility for EWS category in NEET-UG below:

Those candidates whose family is less than Rs.8 lakh per annum will be eligible for EWS quota in NEET-UG.

The family must not own more than 5 acres of agricultural land.

The residential flat area should be less than 1000 sq. ft and the residential plot area should be less than 100 square yards (if in a notified municipality sector) to be eligible for EWS quota.

The residential plot's area should be less than 200 square yards (if in a non-notified municipality sector).

NOTE- The EWS Quota in NEET UG is applicable for MBBS/ BDS/ BAMS/ BHMS/ BUMS/ BNYS/ AIPT.

How to Obtain EWS Certificate for NEET?

Follow the steps given below if you fall under the EWS category and want to obtain EWS certificate for NEET:

Step 1: The first step is to obtain INCOME and ASSET CERTIFICATES from the government authorities. The government authorities which can provide you with Income and Asset Certificates are given below:

District Magistrate/ Additional District Magistrate/ Deputy Commissioner/ Additional’ Deputy Commissioner/

Revenue Officers/ Tehsildar

Sub-Divisional Officers

Step 2: The Officer who issues the certificate will only do the same after carefully verifying all the relevant documents and following the due process as prescribed by the respective State/ UT.

Note: While applying in EWS category for NEET 2020, you have to choose the category in the application form as "General-EWS". Also, you are not required to upload your EWS certificate in the NEET application form. NEET UG EWS certificate will be verified at the Counselling by the Central or the State counselling authority. In case, a candidate is unable to produce the EWS certificate, then their admission will be cancelled and will be counted for admission under General category.

If you have qualified NEET entrance exam, you can take admission in MBBS at Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences. But in order to take admission you also need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria:-

  • You must be at least 17 years.
  • Age must not be more than 25 years.
