UGC Suspends Engineering Degrees Awarded by 4 Deemed Universities in Distance Mode

  • Distance degrees in engineering offered by four deemed universities have been cancelled by the UGC.
  • The Supreme Court directed AICTE to conduct a test for the students whose engineering degrees will be cancelled.
UGC Suspends Engineering Degrees Awarded by 4 Deemed Universities in Distance Mode

In the latest decision, the higher education regulator, University Grants Commission has cancelled engineering degrees awarded by four deemed universities through distance mode. Recently, the Supreme Court of India directed the universities not to offer engineering courses in distance mode. From the academic session 2018-19, the deemed universities can offer distance learning courses in different fields with prior approval apart from engineering. The apex court further ordered a CBI probe into granting retrospective approvals to four of these institutes.

UGC has cancelled the distance engineering degrees awarded by the following four institutes: -

  • Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Tamil Nadu)
  • Allahabad Agricultural Institute
  • Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (Rajasthan)
  • JRN Rajasthan Vidyapeeth

These deemed universities and their technical programmes come under the regulations of All India Council for Technical Education. These four universities launched the distance courses in engineering without the prior approval of AICTE. Therefore, all the engineering degrees awarded by these universities through distance mode have been cancelled, confirmed the UGC.

Recently, the Supreme Court directed AICTE to conduct an examination for the students whose degrees would stand suspended by January 15, 2018. The test will be similar to GATE, and students will not be given more than two chances to clear the examination. The degrees of these students will stand valid only if they clear the test conducted by AICTE. An official notification regarding the qualifying exam will be issued soon by AICTE.
