HRD Ministry: 45% Engineering Students Placed Through Campus Placements in 2017-18

Data that has been shared by the Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal shows that in the year 2017-18, the percentage of students who received campus placement was more than 45%. The Minister said changes will be taking place in order to improve the employability of students.

Over the years of producing Engineers who work in some of the top global companies in the world, various National-level engineering institutes have been successful in placing almost half their students through campus placement, in the year 2017-18. As per the statistics that have been released by the HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, 45.29% of the engineering students were placed in jobs via campus placement. He stated that 3,59,193 students out of a total of 7,92,970 students were able to get a job through campus placement.

The Union Minister also mentioned that as per data, out of the 23,298 students who graduate from different Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology as well as National Institutes of Technology, 17,946 students had been placed through campus placement by the institutes in 2018-19. He continued to state that the graduates will be employed as and when the opportunities arise. He also stated that the government is continuously on the move to increase employment opportunities in India.

However, certain changes will also be implemented, such as restricting the addition of new seats in traditional courses, which also witness low employment opportunity as well. However, the addition of seats to the new age courses such as Artificial Intelligence will continue to be added. These changes are being expected to take force from the academic year of 2020.

With questions being raised on the employability of the engineering students as well as the steps taken to improve the conditions of the students, in terms of their employability, Union Minister Pokriyal stated that various steps have been taken to improve the employability of the students which include mandatory internship for the students.

The All India Council of Technical Education has conducted various surveys where they have been able to find out the various issues that the engineering students face once they graduate. Some of the problems that have been mentioned by the Council include the utilization of the entire capacity of the educational institutions as well as the employability of the students.

Keeping in mind the data that has been collected by AICTE, they have suggested different recommendations in bringing certain changes dealing with issues such as the employability of the students' employability of the student and many more. One such solution to the various problems that are being faced the engineering colleges include halting any further addition of seats for the span of two years, after which the decision can be changed if required.
