NID and IIMA are all set to partially implement the EWS Quota (Economically Weaker Section) from this year, i.e. 2020. Students with a total annual family income of Rs. 8 Lakh or less will benefit from this step of the institutes. NID has decided to add 13 more seats to its B.Des course whereas IIMA has planned on implementing 10% EWS Quota. Unlike last year, when some of the top institutes did not reserve the 25% quota for EWS (economically weaker section), IIMA (Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad) and NID (National Institute of Design) have delivered the good news to the students who had to take a step back from receiving quality education due to lack of financial resources. The institutes have decided to offer benefit to the students with an annual family income of 8 Lakh or less.

Those who are aware of the development of IIMA said that this move that has been taken by the institute will result in a 10% increase in seats for its flagship course PG programme in Management and Food and Agri-Business Management. As per the officials, IIMA has shortlisted around 30 students for the EWS category. The minimum CAT percentile required for those selected under EWS is 90.75. According to the reports, a total of 1,243 students have been selected for the second round of admission at IIMA.

NID is yet to make any required calculations before arriving at the final number of seats but as per the estimate, around 13 seats will be added by NID in B.Des (Bachelor of Design) course. Earlier, NID’s intake was 112 but after the implementation of the EWS quota, it will enrol 125 students in its B.Des course. M.Des (Master of Design) is set to benefit the most from this step as a total of 62 seats will be added under the EWS quota for 19 courses. It will take the intake to 347 from the new academic year.

IIMA official confirmed the news by saying that it will go forward with the step from the academic year 2020-22. The sources close to development stated that the institute will welcome 10% quota this year and will gradually increase the intake.
The Director of NID, Praveen Nahar, said that infrastructure and hostel will be a challenge for the institute. He further stated that they are awaiting grants and they might have to amend the hostel occupancy policy or hire a space outside the campus temporarily.

Authorities at NID and IIMA have chosen to partially adopt the EWS quota at first because of the challenge fo infrastructure. IIMA has already started building new dorms for the accommodation of the new students under the EWS quota. The institute is also keeping in mind the future expansion plan. A faculty member of IIMA revealed that dorms were being built but by the time the new batch will come in, they would not be ready. All existing students will be shifted to the new dorms as the renovation will start in the old dorm.

NID and IIMA are premier institutes and the students are ever ready to take admission at these colleges. The good news is that both the institutes are trying to remove financial constraints that a candidate has to encounter while applying for admissions. Although it is not certain yet if the students from the general category or the institute will have to bear the additional cost of outside occupancy.
