From the 2020-21 academic session onwards, 5% of the total seats in all the undergraduate programmes at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar will be reserved for the students belonging to the Union Territory of Ladakh. The official statement, which was released on May 16, 2020, also added that the quota for the Ladakh students will be adjusted within the seats reserved for various categories at the NIT Srinagar. This decision has been taken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

The new reservation policy will be applicable only for the undergraduate programmes which the National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT-S) offers. Some experts see this decision of MHRD as a step towards the upliftment of the locals of Ladakh in Srinagar.

The Centre on the 05th of August 2019 had revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the formation of two new Union Territories - Ladakh and Jammu & Kasmir. Under article 370, J&K had its own Constitution, its own flag and enjoyed a certain set of benefits.
