NITs GATE Cutoff 2021 (Out), 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 - Check NIT M.Tech Admission Process

Sakunth KumarPublished On: July 06, 2021 | GATE

NITs has initiated the M.Tech admission process from June 8 onwards. Check all the details regarding NITs M.Tech admissions, GATE cutoff and admission process here.

NITs GATE Cutoff

National Institutes of Technology (NIT) is the best option for students to pursue M.Tech course apart from IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology). As NITs are located in most parts across the country, many aspirants prefer to join the M.Tech course in the nearest NIT located in their region or state. However, M.Tech admissions at NIT are purely based on the GATE score, and NITs will come up with individual GATE cutoff after the announcement of GATE results. Similar to IITs, the GATE score is mandatory for candidates to take M.Tech admission at NITs. The M.Tech admission process of IITs and NITs is different. At present, NITs take part in the Centralised Counselling Process to fill M.Tech seats in their institutes. The new system replaced the older system where students had to apply individually for each institute, take part in an interview, etc. More details associated with NIT GATE cutoff, M.Tech admission process, M.Tech course fee at NITs, eligibility criteria and selection criteria here.

About GATE Cutoff for NITs

The GATE Cutoff for each NIT will be different from others. Each NIT will determine its GATE cutoff based on a bunch of factors. However, the GATE cutoff for all NITs will be uploaded on the official website of CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech), and students must check the same from the CCMT website. Some of the factors based on which NITs prepare GATE cutoff are –

  • Previous year GATE cutoff of NIT is one of the major criteria for determining the M.Tech GATE cutoff for the upcoming admission season.
  • The difficulty level (easy/ moderate/ difficult) is another component that plays a crucial role in deciding the GATE cutoff for each specialisation of the M.Tech course offered by NITs.
  • The reputation of institutes, the total number of M.Tech seats available in each specialisation, the total number of aspirants competing for M.Tech admission at each NIT and the total number of candidates cleared GATE are the other factors that help NITs in preparing GATE cutoff for M.Tech courses.

NITs M.Tech Admission & Counselling Process through GATE

The NIT M.Tech admission process through GATE is completely different from the M.Tech admission process of IITs. NIT M.Tech admission process does not involve written test/ interview, and the candidates are granted admission purely on the basis of GATE score and GATE cutoff of the respective NIT. The M.Tech admission process of NITs (National Institutes of Technology) through GATE involves five stages –

Online Registration, Choice Filling & Locking of Choices: After the announcement of GATE 2020 results, the qualifiers of GATE 2020/ 2019/ 2018 are required to register on the official website of CCMT. While filling the online application, the applicants must complete the choice filling form. Here, the candidates will have to choose the institute and M.Tech specialisation for seeking admission. A candidate is allowed to fill any number of choices as per his/ her requirement. After choice filling, the candidates must lock the choices with the specified date.

Online Seat Allotment: At this stage, the choices filled and locked by the candidates will be processed and seat allocation will be made in the order of merit. NITs will not send separate seat allotment letter to the selected candidates individually, and the candidates can download the same from the CCMT website. Later candidates must choose float/ slide/ freeze option. More details can be checked below.

Floating, Sliding and Freezing: During the reporting period, the candidates will have the option to specify his willingness with regard to seat allotment, i.e., Float, Slide, and Freeze. More details regarding the same are elaborated below –

Floating

Floating choice implies the willingness of the candidate to be considered for all higher preferred choices across the NITs for further rounds of seat allotment. These candidates can participate in the further round of seat allotment without accepting the seat in Round 1/ Round 2 allotment.

Sliding

Sliding option implies the willingness of candidates to be considered for all higher preferred choices within the respective NIT allotted to him/ her during further rounds of seat allotment.

Freezing

Freezing option implies the willingness of candidates to accept the allotted seat and remain fixed with the programme and seat allotment to him/ here. These candidates will not be allowed to take part in the further rounds of the admission process.

Payment of Seat Acceptance Fee: After completing the above process, candidates who accepted the admission and downloaded the admission allotment letter must pay the fee acceptance fee of Rs. 20,000. The seat acceptance fee can be paid by using debit card/ credit card or net banking.

Reporting to Reporting Centre: After the payment of seat acceptance fee, the candidates must visit the nearest reporting centre along with prescribed certificates/ documents for verification.

Documents to be Produced at the Time of Reporting

After the payment of seat acceptance fee, the candidates must report to the reporting centre along with the following documents –

  • Printout of CCMT registration form and locked choices
  • Printout of Provisional seat allotment letter
  • GATE scorecard (2020/ 2019/ 2018)
  • Proof of Identity
  • Original Class 10, 12 and B.Tech certificate or mark sheet

Dear Student,

I am sorry to say but you cannot apply for M.Tech in Computer Science if you have appeared for the GATE in Civil Engineering paper. You will be eligible for admission to M.Tech in Civil Engineering only. You should have appeared for the GATE CS paper if you wanted to apply for the Computer Science course.
