The NIT M.Tech admission process is different from the IITs. Presently, all the NITs participate in the Centralized Counseling for M.Tech./ M.Arch./ M.Plan. (CCMT) process to fill M.Tech seats at the respective institutes. The new system replaced the older system where earlier students had to apply individually for each institute, participate in an interview etc. Candidates can find more details related to the NIT GATE cutoff 2024, the M.Tech admission process, the M.Tech course fee at NITs, eligibility criteria, and selection criteria here.

GATE Cutoff for NIT MTech Admission

The GATE Result 2024 has been released on March 16, 2024, on the official website of IISc Bangalore. A GATE score of 800-850 is the most desirable as it increases the chances of securing MTech admission to the top NITs. However, scoring between 600-700 in the GATE exam is considered satisfactory as it puts candidates in a good position to secure NIT MTech admission. This trend of increasing NIT GATE cutoff for MTech admissions reflects the growing competitiveness of the exam and the demand for seats in these prestigious institutions. As the number of applicants continues to rise, so does the level of competition, leading to higher cutoff scores each year.

About NIT GATE Cutoff

The GATE cutoff 2024 for NIT will be different from others. Each NIT will determine its GATE cutoff based on a bunch of factors. However, the GATE cutoff for all NITs will be uploaded on the official website of CCMT from where students must check the same. Some of the factors based on which NITs prepare the GATE cutoff are –

  • The previous year's GATE cutoff for NIT is one of the major criteria for determining the NIT GATE cutoff for the upcoming admission season

  • The difficulty level (easy/ moderate/ difficult) is another component that plays a crucial role in deciding the NIT GATE cutoff 2024 for each specialization of the M.Tech course

  • The reputation of institutes, the total number of M.Tech seats available in each specialization, the total number of aspirants competing for NIT M.Tech admission, and the total number of candidates who cleared GATE are the other factors that help NITs in preparing for GATE cutoff for M.Tech courses

NIT M.Tech Admission & Counselling Process through GATE 2024

The NIT M.Tech admission process through GATE is completely different from the M.Tech admission process of IITs. The NIT M.Tech admission process does not involve a written test/ interview, and the candidates are granted admission purely based on GATE score and GATE cutoff of the respective NIT. The M.Tech admission process of NITs (National Institutes of Technology) through GATE involves five stages –

Online Registration, Choice Filling & Locking of Choices

After the announcement of GATE 2024 results, the qualifiers of GATE examination are required to register on the official website of CCMT. While filling out the online application, the applicants must complete the choice filling form. Here, the candidates will have to choose the institute and M.Tech specialization for seeking admission. A candidate is allowed to fill any number of choices as per his/ her requirement. After choice filling, the candidates must lock the choices with the specified date.

Online Seat Allotment

At this stage, the choices filled and locked by the candidates will be processed and seat allocation will be made in the order of merit. NITs will not send separate seat allotment letters to the selected candidates individually, and the candidates can download the same from the CCMT website. Later candidates must choose float/ slide/ freeze option. More details can be checked below.

Floating, Sliding, and Freezing

During the reporting period, the candidates will have the option to specify their willingness to seat allotment, i.e., Float, Slide, and Freeze. More details regarding the same are elaborated below –

OptionsDetails

Floating

Floating choice implies the willingness of the candidate to be considered for all higher preferred choices across the NITs for further rounds of seat allotment. These candidates can participate in the further round of seat allotment without accepting the seat in Round 1/ Round 2 allotment.

Sliding

Sliding option implies the willingness of candidates to be considered for all higher preferred choices within the respective NIT allotted to him/ her during further rounds of seat allotment.

Freezing

Freezing option implies the willingness of candidates to accept the allotted seat and remain fixed with the programme and seat allotment to him/ here. These candidates will not be allowed to take part in the further rounds of the admission process.

Payment of Seat Acceptance Fee

After completing the above process, candidates who accepted the admission and downloaded the admission allotment letter must pay the fee acceptance fee of Rs. 20,000. The seat acceptance fee can be paid by using a debit card/ credit card or net banking.

Reporting to the Allotted Centre

After the payment of the seat acceptance fee, the candidates must visit the nearest reporting centre along with prescribed certificates/ documents for verification.

Documents Required at the Time of Reporting

After the payment of the seat acceptance fee, the candidates must report to the reporting centre along with the following documents –

  • Printout of CCMT registration form and locked choices

  • Printout of Provisional seat allotment letter

  • GATE scorecard (2024/ 2023/ 2022)

  • Proof of Identity

  • Original Class 10, 12 and B.Tech certificate or mark sheet

  • Original Category Certificate (applicable to SC/ ST/ OB categories)
