The Finance Ministry has recently approved the proposal of holding a Common Entrance Test for various Competitive Exams for Government Jobs. The Government job exams that would be included in this rein are the exams for Group B or Non-Gazetted Posts, Group C or Clerical Exams and equivalent public bank exams.

Sources state that the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance accepted the proposal and sent it forward to the Cabinet. The cabinet will further consider and discuss the proposal before it actually comes into action. A New Recruitment Agency is to be set up to conduct a Commons Entrance test for all these posts. The results of the same would be sent forward to respective agencies.

For now, the proposal has included exams conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC). IBPS and SSC conduct prelims exams to shortlist deserving candidates and then arranges a mains exam to finalise the best candidates. Due to extreme similarities in the preliminary exam patters, the thought of conducting a CET was raised. NRA would be conducting the CET and sending the final results to the respective recruiters. However, the mains exam would not be conducted by the NRA.

The proposal contains the famous SSC-CGL Examination conducted for the appointment of Assistant Section Officer at various departments of Ministries like Railways, Customs, Income Tax etc. IBPS Clerk exam is also going to be conducted by NRA, however, IBPS PO Exam is out of the NRA league.

As per the records, over 2.5 crore candidates appeared last year for these competitive exams and the number increases, year after year. If the implementation of NRA CET comes into action, applicants would save a lot of time. Currently, competitive exams for job occur in different months, having a CET would club all the exams of equivalent levels and students will have it easy to apply, appear as well as prepare for these exams.
