As per the recent notification released by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the B.Tech and Diploma in Engineeringdegrees awarded by IGNOU till 2011-12 will be considered as valid. Earlier, these two degrees were offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) as a distance learning program. However, the program was later discontinued by IGNOU as AICTE scrapped the distance learning programs in Technical Education. As per the norms stated by AICTE & UGC, the Technical courses which are offered in Distance Learning mode could not be considered as valid.
Since then, there was consistent litigation running against the validity of these two Distance Learning Program offered by IGNOU in Indian courts. In the year 2018, the Supreme Court of India validated the recognition of these Distance Learning degrees till the academic year 2009-10. This was stated by the Policy and Academic Planning Bureau of the Technical Education Regulator. This means that the degreed of the candidates who were enrolled in the Distance Learning Program offered by IGNOU till 2009-10 will be considered as valid.
Currently, the Apex Court has granted acceptance to the petitions for the 2011-12 academic year stating that there is no technical distance learning programme offered by IGNOU after this batch and hence, the batch till 2011-12 will be given the validation. As per the official statement given by the AICTE, as per the judgment of the Supreme Court, there is no issue on the technical distance learning degrees awarded by IGNOU till 2011-12, and such degrees will be considered valid as a special case.
