Diploma in Engineering or Diploma in Technical Education or Technical Diploma or Diploma in Engineering & Technology is a course that focuses on skills-oriented and practical training. It is a specialized course that only deals with the requirements when compared with an undergraduate engineering degree. It seeks to provide candidates with industry or job-related basic engineering knowledge, computing and analysis, scientific skills, mathematical techniques, English Communication Skills, and the ability to use problem-solving strategies.
Diploma in Engineering course has a total duration of 3 years which is divided into six semesters. Many countries in the world recognize it as equivalent to the pre-engineering or bridging course when regarding continuing studies in engineering-related bachelor or associate degree programs. Polytechnic Admission to a diploma in engineering is done on the basis of class 10 or 12 percentages which varies from college to college. However, candidates who are not able to get admission in BE/BTech degree directly can apply for this program and get direct admission via lateral entry. This course is available in a variety of fields including electrical, mechanical, computer information technology, etc. After completing a diploma in engineering course, candidates can either continue further engineering studies at the undergraduate level or get employment as technologists, technicians, supervisors, foremen, machinists, workshop technicians, superintendents, draftsmen, station technicians (energy, thermal, and aeronautical), maintenance and service technicians, automobile technicians, equipment mechanics and technicians, agricultural overseers, CAD/CAM programmer, instrument technicians, junior instructors, designers, electricians, manufacturing, tool and die.
This technical degree is available online as well as in offline mode. Some of the popular diploma in engineering colleges in India are IIT Madaras, Lovely Professional University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Integral University, etc. The diploma in engineering fees ranges from INR 10,000 to INR 5,00,000 approximately.

For many candidates willing to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology, who are not able to pay the heavy engineering colleges fees, for them, a diploma program is a great option. Candidates can register themselves in a diploma in engineering course to get direct admission into the second year of the B Tech and B.E program through a lateral admission procedure. A diploma in engineering acts as a back door entry into the B.tech/B.E decreasing the overall fee for candidates taking up a diploma course. One of the most significant advantages of pursuing a Diploma in Engineering Polytechnic is that many state governments now grant polytechnic students reservations for junior engineer jobs.
Candidates after the completion of Diploma of Engineering or Polytechnic courses, are offered junior and technical job roles such as IT Assistant, Junior Engineer, Clerk, PSU Jobs, and Technician. After completion of the polytechnic courses, candidates can pursue private employment in sectors such as manufacturing, electrical, construction, or communication.
The exams conducted for diploma in engineering courses can be in a semester pattern or yearly depending on the institution. Diploma in Engineering Exams are conducted as 4 class assessments or CAs, projects, and semester wise exams. Candidates are mandated to have a minimum of 75% attendance every semester. It is to be noted that, marks of all the exams are evaluated and taken into consideration while evaluating the final scores of the candidates in the yearly exams.
The majority of the yearly pattern diploma in engineering courses are of three years. Whereas, the institution which follows the semester pattern provides the courses in four years. These four years of study are conjoined with three years of study and one year for an industrial internship. These engineering courses can be categorized into two kinds counting on the entrance exam certificates required, first is the post-senior secondary certificate, and the second one is the post-higher secondary certificate. Candidates after the completion of class 10th can pursue the post-senior secondary certificate courses offered by the universities. Candidates after completing class 10+2 are eligible to pursue the higher-senior secondary certificate courses offered by the colleges.
Making a career in the engineering sector is a dream for many students. The journey of becoming an engineer is not easy, one needs to pass the class 12 exam, sit for the entrance exam, and study bachelor's for 4 years to get into this profession. But, the times have changed now. Candidates can become engineers after class 10th also by completing a diploma program. Candidates who want to start a career early after Class 10th can opt for this course. This technical degree is a great way to start your career after class 10th instead of completing 4 Bachelors years degrees after class 12th. Moreover, you also get the option to study bachelor's degree also via lateral entry direct second-year admission. And, if you want to you can also get a master's degree.
