BITS Pilani May Take Part in IIT Joint Counselling Panel

According to sources, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considering to have BITS Pilani as a part of the joint counselling process which will be conducted in the month of June for admissions to B.Tech courses in the premier engineering and technical institutes of the country.

The primary aim behind this contemplation is to avoid any B.Tech aspirant withdrawing his or her admission from the IITs or NITs on being offered admission in a preferred branch of study at BITS Pilani. No response or official confirmation has been received in this regard yet. It is important to note that even if BITS Pilani agrees to take part in the combined counselling, it could conduct the admission process on the basis of the BITSAT scores itself.

It has been observed that since BITS Pilani conducted its own admission and counselling process, often a student would take part in both JoSAA and BITS counselling and block a seat in the IITs/NITs until he/she found out what branch was being offered to them at BITS Pilani. If they got a branch of their choice at Pilani, they withdrew their admission while leaving a vacancy at IITs/NITs.

The top 2.25 lakh candidates who will qualify in the JEE Main 2018 exam scheduled to be conducted in April 2018 will then appear for the JEE Advanced 2018 exam to compete for IIT admissions. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will conduct the counselling process wherein seats will be allotted to candidates based on their rank in the merit list and the specialisation they are seeking admission in. On the other hand, BITS Pilani will conduct counselling basis the BITSAT 2018 scores.

Adding further, an NIT director said that private engineering colleges have also participated in the counselling process in the past years and the demand for the same has only increased. It also helps the private institutes to market themselves at par with the IIT-NIT counselling.

Another update also states that the HRD Ministry will soon issue an official notification detailing the guidelines of including private institutes in the common counselling process.
