The University of Delhi has announced that it will begin the 2020-21 academic session from July 10 onward in online mode for the students who are in the third, fifth and seventh semesters in the undergraduate and third semester in the postgraduate courses. DU is yet to announce the dates for the beginning of the academic session for the new batches.
The varsity released an official notification which stated that the academic session will begin from August 10, 2020, in the online mode subject to the ongoing coronavirus situation or any other emergency. The university also mentioned that they have taken the decision after considering the UGC revised guidelines which were released sometime back.
The decision has come at a time when the new UGC guidelines are being challenged in the Supreme Court by various students from across India. They have filed a plea in the court regarding the UGC guidelines for safety concerns amid the coronavirus outbreak. The hearing is still going on in that matter. Also, DU's decision to conduct open book exams for the final year UG and PG students is being challenged in the High Court. On July 29, the High Court had asked DU to file an affidavit on the mock test and also on the status of the Common Service Centre (CSC) and scribes for the visually disabled students.
Due to the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, the upcoming academic session has been delayed. The coronavirus lockdown has not only affected the classes but most of the national level entrance tests as well such as NEET and JEE have been postponed.
