DU Admission 2019: Psychology Course Witnesses Heavy Demand

Delhi University has witnessed an overflow of applications in its B.A. (Hons) Psychology course. Colleges such as LSR, Gargi College and Indraprastha College for Women has admitted more students than the allotted number of seats.

The 2019 admissions of Delhi University witnessed a surge in the applications for the course of B.A. Psychology (Honours). Most of the colleges of the University of Delhi (DU) have admitted more students in the BA Psychology course than the allotted seats.

Even the CBSE class 12th toppers Hansika Shukla and Karishma Arora who score 99.8 per cent have opted for B.A.Psychology (Honours) course at Lady Shri Ram College which is an indicator of the popularity of the respective course at the UG level.

According to the reports, around 1,12, 312 candidates have applied for the B.A. Psychology course at the Delhi University colleges this year as compared to last year. Around 57,000 applications were received for the same last year. Colleges popular for its psychology course such as LSR, Gargi College and Indraprastha College for Women were filled soon after the release of the first cutoff list. Even the cutoff was higher as compared to last year. The highest cutoff this year was set by LSR which is 98.75 per cent.

Suman Sharma, Principal LSR stated that one of the major reason for the growing popularity of B.A. Psychology course is that the society is breaking away from the stereotype and people are opening up about the mental health issues. It is no more stigma and the demand for such professionals is also rising to treat problems such as depression, anxiety etc.

She further informed that most of the students who pass out from LSR start working as psychologists. Even the job prospectus for them is way better now. Several corporate nowadays hire Psychological Counsellors to evaluate the mental health of their employees.

Surbhika Maheshwari, Assistant Professor of Psychology, University of Delhi is of the view that society at large has started to understand Psychology as the serious discipline which was not the case in the past. People, in general, are more aware and open about mental health issues.
